Upskill new staff and grow a more capable workforce, with flexible, funded workplace-based traineeships.
A traineeship is a practical way to recruit, develop and retain employees while they learn on the job. It combines paid employment with structured training, allowing your team to build skills that are directly relevant to their role while continuing to contribute to your business.
At UNE Partnerships, we work with employers across NSW and Queensland to deliver nationally recognised traineeships that support workforce development without taking employees away from the workplace.
Eligible traineeships may be government subsidised, helping reduce the cost of training. Funding and available qualifications vary by state and eligibility requirements. A traineeship is integrated into the employee’s normal role, so learning happens alongside everyday work rather than away from it. Employees build skills as they gain experience, with structured training and support provided throughout the qualification. The training compliments the employee’s role with UNE Partnerships providing support throughout the journey.

One of the biggest advantages of employing a trainee is that the cost of training can often be heavily subsidised or even fully funded: for eligible trainees through the NSW/QLD Government’s traineeship programs. In many cases, employers choose to cover any remaining student fee as part of their investment in staff development, meaning the trainee can complete their qualification at little or no cost to themselves. Eligibility and funding levels vary depending on the qualification and individual circumstances.
In addition to subsidised training, employers may also be eligible for Australian Government or State Government employer incentives and wage subsidies when they employ an eligible trainee. These financial incentives can help offset recruitment and training costs, making traineeships a cost-effective way to attract new talent, upskill existing employees and build a skilled workforce. Incentive eligibility depends on factors such as the qualification, occupation, employment arrangement and current government programs.
We can help you determine what funding and incentives may be available for your business and guide you through the application process.

A traineeship is designed to fit around the job, with training aligned to day-to-day tasks rather than pulling the employee away from the role. The best outcomes happen when the workplace sees training as part of normal work.
Managers don’t need to “teach the course,” but consistent support, such as brief check-ins, confirming workplace opportunities, and reinforcing expectations, helps the trainee stay on track and apply learning correctly.
Traineeships are commonly used for new starters, and eligibility for government funding is often linked to when employment commenced and state program rules. Generally it is available for new staff in their first 3 months if full time or 12 months if part-time. Check the eligibility requirements here.
UNE Partnerships monitor progress and work with the trainee (and where appropriate, the workplace) to establish momentum, address barriers, and adjust pacing where possible, so “behind” doesn’t become “disengaged.”
Whether you’re hiring, scaling, or improving performance, a traineeship can help you build capability where it matters most.
