UNE Partnerships celebrates the success of NSW Government Graduates

UNE Partnerships would like to congratulate the NSW Government Graduate Program cohort of 2017, with 85 graduates celebrating the successful completion of the Diploma of Government at Dexus Place in Sydney on 13 July 2018.

UNE Partnerships are incredibly proud of our partnership with the NSW Public Service Commission, which has seen the NSW Government Graduate Program grow from a pilot group of 25 graduates in 2016, to more than 160 graduates in this year’s intake.

      Professor Todd Walker, the Chairman and Managing Director of UNE Partnerships and the Provost and Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of New England, described some of the strengths of this highly customised training program on the day;

“While it is recognized that those graduating today will now add a Diploma of Government to other tertiary qualifications,
we believe this learning experience is a special one.

Learning is most effective when it can be immediately leveraged in the workplace and we have worked hard to ensure
this program supports learning occurring on the job through experience and exposure via mentors, managers and colleagues.
Enabling a broader perspective at the start of career means the graduate contribution to their work role is clearer and
they emerge from the graduate program ready to make a significant impact.”

Graduates were also treated to an inspiring speech from Emma Hogan, who shared some of the highs and lows of her career journey from an early school leaver, to eventually become the NSW Public Service Commissioner, imparting some valuable life lessons and career advice to  everyone who was fortunate enough to attend.

UNE Partnerships have worked closely with the NSW Public Service Commission over the past three years to extensively customise the Diploma of Government to suit and support the NSW Government Graduate Program. Activities and outcomes have been carefully mapped against the NSW Public Sector Capability Framework to ensure the skills and knowledge are practical, meaningful and relevant to work in the NSW Public Sector.

The continued success and growth of this academic component of the graduate  program is testament to the hard work and commitment of the graduates themselves, as well as the tireless efforts of UNE Partnerships staff and the support teams across the NSW Public Service Commission and the broader NSW Government.

UNE Partnerships look forward to continuing this important relationship with the NSW Public Service Commission and we wish all of the graduates every success into the future.

              Person-centred respite care in Queensland

UNE Partnerships in collaboration with the University of New England (UNE) are delighted to announce the development of the new Person-Centred Respite Care Program, proudly funded by the Queensland Government.

The Project commenced in April 2017, during this time we have collaborated with stakeholders to draft, evaluate and refine the content and visual style of the program.

              Aim of the program

The program is an evidence-based and multi-dimensional package that aims to enhance the ability and capability of service providers to deliver a person-centred respite care approach and address current barriers to uptake. In development of the program our focus was on identifying gaps in information and not duplicating existing resource materials. It is important to note to avoid confusion that while the resource material supports and references accreditation standards it is not intended to be an accredited program.

              Benefits of the program

Expected benefits from adopting the program is described below:

              • Organisations adopting the Product into their service delivery planning will have access to resources for assessment of their current person-centred care capability.
              • Staff and volunteers utilising the Product will be better informed and equipped to meet the behavioral and physical needs of people with cognitive impairment. Resulting in an increase in confidence and competence in caring for their clients.
              • Carers and family members accessing the Product will increase their uptake of facilities that have meaningful activities meeting the physical, mental and emotional needs of recipients of day respite care.

Click here to download the detailed Project Update for more information about the program.

UNE Partnerships and AAPM Anniversary Gala Dinner

Celebrating a strong and collaborative 30-year relationship, UNE Partnerships and AAPM enjoyed a formal function at Beumonde on the Point in Perth on October 23. With a view of the beautiful Swan River, UNE Partnerships Board members, alumni, staff and students celebrated the anniversary milestone with the AAPM Board and members. The dinner was attended by over 50 guests, including guest of honour the Hon. Roger Cook MLA, Minister for Health and Mental Health in Western Australia.

Other distinguished guests included Gail O’Brien from Lighthouse foundation, members of the AAPM and UNEP Boards, alumni and current students. Two indigenous scholarships were awarded by the Minister to Michael Cook and Derise Jones of Geraldton Regional Aboriginal Medical Service.

The night included many tributes to AAPM and UNE Partnerships. Gary Smith discussed the shared history of AAPM and UNEP, while Colleen Sullivan spoke about the future of the relationship. The Minister then addressed the importance of Primary care, before Anne Davis spoke about the Practice program, the flexibility and quality of the program, and the UNE Partnerships indigenous programs within.

The final speaker of the evening was Karen Campbell, an enthusiastic graduate of the Diploma of Professional Practice Leadership. Karen delivered a wonderfully heart-warming and positive speech on completing the qualification and the benefits for herself, her practice, and her family who supported her study.

                    2017 Practice Management Graduation
                    November 27 2017

Ensuring practice success through effective training

Gary Smith is a medical practice manager with more than 30 years’ experience.

As well as managing a 10-doctor general practice in Western Sydney, he also finds the time to sit on six boards and consult within the Health industry.

As an experienced medical practice manager, I’ve learnt a lot over the past 30 years about how to achieve success in my field and four key steps stand out as key to such success:

                    Empowering others

It’s important to lift yourself out of the day-to-day operations of a health practice by empowering other people to do some of the operational work for you.  When you do this, you free up your time to focus on the big picture and ensure the practice is meeting its business objectives.

Adopting a leadership style focused around an empowerment process helps build trust in your relationships with other staff and allows the practice to flourish when you are not there.

                    Sharing what you know

I’m a great believer in the idea that the knowledge I’ve gained is not for me to keep. Knowledge is only as valuable as the number of people I can share it with because sharing such knowledge empowers others.

Ongoing education and training is also a great motivator for people and allows them feel they are developing their individual skills while contributing to a thriving practice.

                    Delivering learning in diverse ways

It’s important to remember that people learn in different ways. For people to get the most out of their education and training, it needs to be delivered in a variety of ways, via different modalities, so that everyone can get the most out of the learning.

To feel comfortable at work and perform to the best of their ability, people also need resources and tools to support them in their roles, along with a framework that recognises the value of educating and training them.  Practices that employ an education and training framework have been shown to create more motivated staff which in turn leads to higher staff retention and higher productivity.

                    Developing a learning culture

As you can see, building a learning culture within an organisation is paramount to its success. Such a culture can focus on formal learning based around roles and structures, or adopt a more informal approach to education and training. And remember that to create a successful learning culture within an organisation, you’ve got to start from the top down, meaning that the people leading the organisation must be on board.  It’s about taking the time to identify what skill sets are required for a practice to flourish and then taking that learning strategy and making it real through the delivery of different forms of training.
